NFL Discontinues Pro Bowl Game, Players to be Honored as Pro Bowlers

ATLANTA (AP) — The NFL announced on Wednesday that the Pro Bowl will no longer be held, ending an exhibition of the league's top players that has taken place in some form since 1951. The game was not played in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, marking the only interruption in the event's history. NFL executive vice president Peter O'Reilly stated at the owners' meeting in Atlanta, "It's OK to be the first league to walk away from a competitive all-star game." The league confirmed that 88 players will still be recognized as Pro Bowlers and will be honored in Los Angeles following this season, with several flag football events scheduled to occur at that time. O'Reilly emphasized that the Pro Bowl has always aimed to recognize players who excel in the NFL, stating, "A Pro Bowl selection will return to its original purpose, honoring the best of the best. We want that distinction to carry even greater meaning for the players, their families, their clubs and our fans." He described the decision as "a shift from the game to the honor." Troy Vincent, the league's executive vice president of football operations, mentioned that players expressed a preference against competitive play after the playoffs, noting, "You come off the championship games and the viewers see the physicality of the game and you try to replicate that. Frankly, it just doesn't sit well. This isn't a good representation." The Pro Bowl has seen a decline in popularity in recent years, having been moved from its traditional location in Honolulu to various cities and transitioning from tackle football to flag football in 2023.
