Two fatalities and ten injuries reported after car strikes crowd in Caen, France

A car struck a group of people near the train station in Caen, northern France, resulting in two fatalities and ten injuries. The incident occurred after a fight reportedly broke out among two groups. Local prefect David Clavière stated that a car deliberately rammed into pedestrians opposite the station, with seven of the injured individuals in critical condition. A 26-year-old man, born in Russia, was arrested approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) away in the port town of Ouistreham following a significant emergency response in the Normandy region. Caen Mayor Aristide Olivier indicated that investigators are working to determine the circumstances leading to the driver's actions. Bruno Coutanceau, a senior security official, noted that there is currently no indication of a terrorist motive, although the investigation is in its early stages. The victims were reported to be men aged between 17 and 40. The suspect was not previously known to intelligence services and was only recognized by police for traffic offenses. Local CCTV tracked the suspect's vehicle. Videos from the scene showed crowds around police vehicles and ambulances, with a large area cordoned off. Some injured individuals are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, according to a spokesperson for the local administration of Calvados. An investigation led by detectives from Caen's Specialised Crime Division has been initiated.
