Santa Monica Increases Police Presence Following Recent Violence

Santa Monica is increasing its police presence in response to a rise in violence in the area, including two shootings that occurred over a weekend. Additional officers will patrol the Santa Monica Pier, beaches, parks, downtown, and residential neighborhoods this week following these incidents. Police Chief Darrick Jacob stated, "Our responsibility is to protect everyone who lives in, works in, and visits Santa Monica. That means being present, visible, and accessible." The city plans to meet with businesses in the downtown area and on the Pier to address their concerns and provide safety resources. The increased police presence follows a chaotic weekend where a knife-wielding man was shot and killed near the Pier after allegedly charging at officers, and another person was shot in the leg during an attempted robbery. This violence is part of a series of incidents that have raised concerns in the normally busy tourist city. In mid-July, a man was fatally shot in a parking lot near the Pier, and a week later, a woman was killed inside a residential care facility. This incident marked Santa Monica's fifth homicide of 2026, surpassing the four homicides recorded during all of 2025. City officials are emphasizing visibility to reassure residents and visitors about safety in Santa Monica. Residents are invited to participate in “Coffee with a Cop” events at Pacific Park on the Pier, scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday. The increased patrols will focus on major tourist attractions, including the Pier, beach, Palisades Park, downtown, and residential neighborhoods.
