Grassroots Initiative Supports Female Basketball Players in Northern Nigeria

A grassroots basketball initiative is providing girls in northern Nigeria with opportunities to train, compete, and pursue their aspirations in sports. Khamila Sani Ibrahim, who grew up in Kano State, recalls the limited opportunities for girls to engage in organized sports and the challenges she faced in balancing family expectations with her passion for basketball. "It is very hard for me to train in basketball," Ibrahim said. "I only go out to play when they are not around, or I tell them that I’m going to visit my friends, and from there I go to the court." In northern Nigeria, sports like basketball and football have traditionally been male-dominated, presenting obstacles such as limited access to facilities, coaching, and funding for girls. The initiative, Grassroots To Greatness (G2G), aims to empower girls in sports by providing them with training and competition opportunities. Founded by youth sports advocate Jawahir Bello, G2G emphasizes participation in sports while respecting cultural values. Players wear custom hijabs and modest athletic attire. Bello noted that despite anticipating resistance from some communities, the initiative has received support from local stakeholders. G2G collaborates with grassroots coaches who manage community teams to mobilize participants. Ibrahim represented Kano State in a G2G tournament that included female players from nine states, experiencing a supportive environment compared to previous male-dominated teams. "What G2G did for us was incredible," Ibrahim said, highlighting the resources provided, including jerseys and financial support. Fatima Diouf, another participant, joined G2G to challenge herself against stronger opponents and gained valuable life skills through the experience. Ibrahim continues to face challenges in balancing training with domestic responsibilities and overcoming doubts from peers. Mansur Abdullahi, assistant coach of Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national football team, emphasized the importance of grassroots organizations in creating opportunities for young athletes. For many participants, the tournaments serve as a platform to test their skills and envision their future in sports. Ibrahim's father initially had concerns about competitive sports but became supportive after witnessing the positive environment of G2G. Ibrahim aspires to secure a college sports scholarship in the United States and hopes to inspire other Muslim girls in northern Nigeria to pursue their dreams in sports. G2G aims to demonstrate that girls can participate in sports while maintaining their cultural identity. "You can keep your identity, stay covered and still achieve something in life," Bello said.
