Za'Darius Smith Returns to NFL After Family Losses

<p>Za'Darius Smith, a three-time Pro Bowl defensive end, stepped away from the NFL last season following the deaths of his mother, grandmother, and father within a short period. After dealing with significant personal grief, Smith has returned to play for the Atlanta Falcons.</p><p>Smith, who has played for six different franchises over 11 seasons, left the Philadelphia Eagles mid-season in October 2025. He was contemplating retirement when he received an opportunity from Atlanta, which he accepted during a challenging time in his life.</p><p>In a press conference, Smith discussed his emotional journey, stating, "I was in a dark place." He had previously met with the Cleveland Browns before finalizing his deal with Atlanta, marking his seventh NFL team. He expressed that football has been a vital outlet for him during difficult times.</p><p>Smith's addition to the Falcons comes as the team seeks to bolster its pass-rushing capabilities following injuries to players Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr.</p><p>Reflecting on his return, Smith said, "This is my happy place." He emphasized the joy he finds in playing football and the support he feels from fans. He also mentioned that his late mother had always wanted him to play for the Falcons.</p><p>Since entering the NFL in 2015, Smith has recorded 343 total tackles, 70.5 sacks, 16 pass deflections, 10 forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. He will turn 34 at the start of the upcoming season. Smith aims to reach 100 career sacks, stating, "However I need to do that, I'm going to try."</p>
