One dead and ten injured in car crash into crowd in northern France

At least one person has died and ten others have been injured after a car crashed into a group of people near a train station in Caen, located in the Normandy region of northern France, according to police reports. A male suspect was arrested following a significant emergency response. Local prefect David Claviere stated that seven of the injured individuals are in critical condition, while three others sustained minor injuries. The incident occurred near a bar, where local media reported that a fight had broken out prior to the crash. Bruno Coutanceau, a senior security official for Caen, indicated that there is currently no indication of a terrorist motive, although the investigation is in its early stages. All victims were reported to be men aged between 17 and 40. Claviere noted that the car 'deliberately drove into pedestrians in the street opposite the train station.' The suspect, a 26-year-old man originally from Russia, was apprehended approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) away in the port town of Ouistreham. He was not previously known to intelligence services and had only been recognized by police for traffic offenses. Social media footage from the scene showed crowds around police vehicles and ambulances, with a large area cordoned off. A spokesperson for the local administration of Calvados informed the BBC that some injured individuals are receiving treatment in a nearby hospital's emergency ward.
