Tim Curry, the British actor renowned for his role as Dr Frank-N-Furter in the musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show, has died at the age of 80. According to a statement from his longtime manager, Marcia Hurwitz, Curry passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles, California, on Wednesday. No cause of death was disclosed.
Curry was a three-time Tony nominee and appeared in numerous films, often portraying villains. His most iconic role was as Frank-N-Furter, a cross-dressing scientist in The Rocky Horror Show, which premiered in 1973 at the Royal Court Theatre in London. He later took the role to Broadway and reprised it in the 1975 film adaptation alongside Barry Bostwick, Meat Loaf, and Susan Sarandon.
In a memorable scene, Curry sang, "I’m not much of a man by the light of day. But by night, I’m one hell of a lover. I’m just a sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania." In a 1975 television interview, he expressed concerns about being defined by the role, stating, "When I read it, I just thought it was very, very witty and funny," although he admitted to initial reluctance.
Curry also starred as the child-killing monster in the 1990 miniseries It, based on Stephen King's horror novel, and played a Soviet medical officer in The Hunt for Red October, a film adaptation of Tom Clancy's novel. Additionally, he portrayed Cardinal Richelieu in the 1993 film The Three Musketeers, featuring Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, and Chris O’Donnell. Sutherland remarked, "Tim Curry was someone I cared deeply about, he was someone I loved working with and I am so lucky to have these memories."
Born in Grappenhall, Cheshire, England, Curry studied drama at Birmingham University. He received his first Tony nomination in 1981 for Amadeus, followed by nominations for My Favorite Year in 1993 and Monty Python’s Spamalot in 2005. Known for his rich baritone voice, he won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1991 for his voice work on Peter Pan and the Pirates.
Curry withdrew from a British stage production in 2011 due to health issues and suffered a stroke in 2013, but he was reported to be recovering with humor. He used a wheelchair afterward and reduced his workload, but returned to the big screen in 2024 with the horror film Stream. Curry never married and had no children, but he was also a composer and singer, performing with his own rock band and releasing several albums.
