Bryan Kohberger Scheduled for Court Hearing to Challenge Guilty Plea

<p>Bryan Kohberger is set to return to court on June 3, 2027, as he seeks to overturn his guilty plea that resulted in a life sentence for the murders of four University of Idaho students. Judge Steven Hippler, who accepted Kohberger's plea and sentenced him, has scheduled a status conference to address Kohberger's petition for post-conviction relief, with an evidentiary hearing also reserved for June 17.</p><p>Kohberger, 31, is currently serving four life sentences without the possibility of parole for the 2022 murders of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, along with an additional 10 years for breaking into the home.</p><p>One year after his guilty plea, Kohberger claimed he was innocent, stating in a handwritten petition that ineffective assistance from his attorneys led him to confess falsely. He alleged that he did not enter his guilty plea knowingly or voluntarily, claiming it was induced by unkept promises and threats from his legal counsel. The specifics of these threats have not been disclosed. Additionally, Kohberger stated that some information was withheld prior to his plea agreement that could have been beneficial to his case.</p><p>The prosecution has responded to Kohberger's petition and filed a motion to dismiss it entirely, while Kohberger's attorneys have yet to respond. Kohberger entered his guilty plea on July 2, 2025, shortly before his trial was scheduled to begin, and signed a written factual basis document the day before, in which he accepted full responsibility for the murders, describing them as willful, unlawful, deliberate, premeditated, and malicious.</p>
