NFL Introduces New Fine Schedule with Points System and Refunds

<p>The NFL and the NFL Players Association have agreed to a one-year experimental change to the fine schedule aimed at addressing player behavior and discipline related to injuries. The changes include a new refund system.</p><p>Club owners meeting in Atlanta on Wednesday were briefed and accepted the changes that will emphasize five player health and safety violations.</p><p>Similar to previous policies, the league will consider past behavior. Players who commit three offenses in the highlighted categories will be suspended for one game.</p><p>Under the new system, players who commit just one violation will receive a 50 percent refund of their fine at the end of the season. The one violation limit applies to the five categories collectively, meaning a player fined for a blindside block cannot receive a refund if they have also been fined for a horse collar tackle.</p><p>The refund policy extends to other categories of fouls as well. Players fined once in any other player safety category, such as roughing the passer, will receive 100 percent of their fine back at season's end if they do not incur another fine for that foul during the season. A second foul in another player safety category will result in the player receiving no refund.</p><p>This system is expected to impact hundreds of players during the 2026 season, similar to previous seasons.</p><p>The new approach is designed to encourage compliance with health and safety rules. Players who avoid fines or stop after one offense will be rewarded with refunds, while repeat offenders face penalties. Repeat offenders will lose all fine money and may be called in for a meeting with a league representative and coaching staff if they approach the suspension threshold.</p><p>Clubs with excessive health and safety violations will also incur increased financial penalties.</p><p>The system resembles the points system used for driving records in the United States. Each offense counts as one point, with three points resulting in a suspension. Players start the 2026 season with a clean record, and if a player has one point towards a suspension at the end of the season, they will reset to zero points for the following season.</p><p>If a player is suspended during the season, they will enter the next season with two points, assuming the system remains unchanged.</p><p>A joint statement from the NFL and NFLPA emphasized that "Player safety is a shared responsibility. These changes focus on the techniques that create the greatest risk while ensuring player, coach, and club accountability. Together we believe this approach will continue to make the game safer for all players."</p>
