Video Shows Mudslides Following Earthquake at Nepal-China Border

<p>A video recorded after flash flooding at the Nepal-China border shows mudslides affecting multiple buildings as residents fled in Gyirong, Tibet, near the border. The mudslides occurred following a 4.4-magnitude earthquake that struck just seven minutes prior to the video being taken, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).</p><p>Nepal's Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal suggested in remarks to the country's parliament that earthquakes may have contributed to the situation, as reported by Reuters.</p><p>Authorities believe the earthquake triggered an <a href="https://foxnews.com/world/american-climber-remains-found-avalanche-pakistan-mountaineers-missing" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">ice-rock avalanche</a> that flowed into the Lhende Khola River in Nepal, according to Reuters.</p><p>At least 95 fatalities have been confirmed, with rescue authorities in Nepal recovering that many bodies. Additionally, Nepal's tourism authority reported that at least 484 tourists are missing, including at least three U.S. citizens. Reports suggest that several dozen more Americans may also be unaccounted for, although no official count has been released by the U.S. government.</p><p>The U.S. State Department stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and is in communication with authorities in Nepal. A spokesperson said, "The Trump Administration has no higher priority than the safety and security of Americans." The spokesperson also noted that the State Department is aware of Americans affected by the floods and is working with local tour agencies and authorities to assist them. Condolences were extended to the victims and their families.</p><p>The State Department encouraged U.S. citizens in the affected areas to monitor local news, follow emergency instructions from local authorities, and enroll in STEP.state.gov for important emergency information. Travel advisories for specific areas within Nepal were also relayed.</p><p>The flood has caused significant damage, destroying buildings and impacting roads, bridges, electricity infrastructure, and communications. Nepali authorities have instructed residents in low-lying areas and along riverbanks to relocate to safer locations.</p><p>Sixty-five individuals are currently receiving treatment at hospitals in and around Kathmandu, according to local officials. Authorities have warned of the potential for a second flood due to a blockage on the Lhende Khola River.</p><p>China has deployed 574 rescuers to the Gyirong land crossing, although one rescuer indicated that it would take hours to reach the affected area, as reported by Reuters. The governments of India and the European Union (EU) have also offered support to Nepal and China.</p><p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences for the loss of life due to the floods and stated that India is prepared to provide humanitarian assistance.
