A manhunt is currently underway in Virginia for a suspect who allegedly ambushed two deputies during a welfare check on Friday night. The incident resulted in the death of Deputy Logan Utt, 31, and left another officer injured. The U.S. Marshals Service has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect, identified as Michael Puckett.
The shooting occurred just before 9:30 p.m. local time when the deputies were dispatched to a residence following a request for a welfare check. Upon arrival, Puckett allegedly opened fire, killing Utt and injuring the second officer, who was saved by his ballistic vest. The deputies returned fire, but Puckett fled the scene and remains at large.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has advised the public not to approach the suspect and to call 911 if he is seen. Utt, who joined the force in 2023 after serving in the military, is remembered as a dedicated officer. The wounded deputy is reported to be in stable condition.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger stated that her office is monitoring the situation and urged anyone with information about Puckett's whereabouts to come forward. The Virginia State Police is leading the investigation.
