Trump Administration Pauses Visa Appointments Worldwide for Training

<p>The Trump administration has directed U.S. embassies and consulates globally to postpone immigrant visa interviews while consular officers undergo training on new public-charge guidance, temporarily halting applications that have reached the interview stage.</p><p>The State Department informed diplomatic posts to reschedule immigrant visa interviews until the training on evaluating whether an applicant is likely to become a public charge is completed.</p><p>A public-charge determination can render an immigrant visa applicant inadmissible under federal immigration law if officials assess that the individual may become reliant on certain forms of public assistance after arriving in the U.S.</p><p>"In early August, we launched a global training initiative at all of our embassies and consulates worldwide. To accommodate this in-depth training, appointments for visa services will be adjusted," a State Department official stated.</p><p>The official further noted that the training aims to ensure evaluations of visa applicants are conducted "comprehensively and consistently."</p><p>For most diplomatic posts, the training sessions are expected to occur this week.</p><p>The State Department did not specify when affected applicants would be notified of their rescheduled interview dates.</p><p>The scheduling changes have created uncertainty among immigrant visa applicants who received notifications that their interviews were canceled without guidance for immediate rescheduling.</p><p>Applicants were informed they would receive future notice of a new interview date but were not provided a timeline for when that communication might occur.</p><p>This decision aligns with President Donald Trump's broader immigration policies, which have expanded beyond illegal immigration to include legal immigration pathways. While Trump campaigned in 2024 on reducing illegal immigration, his administration has also implemented additional restrictions on legal immigration, such as increased fees for specific work visas and new limits on the duration of stay for certain foreign students and journalists.</p><p>The administration has also pursued visa revocations and removal proceedings in cases related to political activity and speech, including actions against some anti-Israel activists. These initiatives have led to court challenges alleging violations of free-speech and due-process rights.</p><p>On Monday, the administration announced plans to revoke the business and tourism visas of up to 200,000 foreigners who have applied for or are seeking asylum in the U.S., which would mark the largest mass visa revocation in U.S. history.</p><p>The immigration agenda has encountered legal challenges as well. On Friday, a federal judge invalidated a State Department policy that suspended the issuance of immigrant visas to applicants from 75 countries, determining that the policy exceeded Secretary of State Marco Rubio's statutory authority.</p><p><i>Reuters contributed to this report.</i></p>
