UN Report Highlights Deteriorating Human Rights Situation in Myanmar

A new report from the United Nations indicates that the human rights situation in Myanmar has significantly worsened, particularly for the Rohingya minority and due to unregulated resource exploitation. The UN's Human Rights Office stated that the military's quest for control following the 2021 coup has exacerbated civilian suffering. The report details tactics employed by the military, including airstrikes and arson attacks, in its conflict with ethnic armed groups. Since the coup, an estimated 8,075 civilians, including 1,074 children, have been killed, with at least 1,241 fatalities occurring in the past year. The report suggests that the actual death toll may be higher, with open sources indicating up to 15,731 civilian deaths since the coup. The violence has led to 3.6 million internally displaced persons and 12.4 million people facing acute hunger, alongside 400,000 young children and mothers suffering from acute malnutrition. In Rakhine State, the military and the Arakan Army have been accused of systematic violations against the Rohingya. The report also highlights the rise of an illicit economy driven by illegal rare earth mining, particularly in Kachin and Shan States, which has led to environmental contamination affecting public health. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk described the findings as deeply troubling and urged states and companies to reconsider their involvement with Myanmar.
