SpaceX to Construct $100 Billion Launch Facility in Louisiana

SpaceX, the rocket company founded by Elon Musk, has announced plans to build its largest launch site in Louisiana. The $100 billion project, named Starbase, Louisiana, is set to begin construction next year on a 125,000-acre (50,585-hectare) site, which will expand the company's operations beyond its current facilities in Texas and Florida. According to SpaceX, the facility will support thousands of Starship flights annually, with missions targeting Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The company aims to launch its first Starship flight from the new base in 2029. The project is expected to create over 3,000 direct jobs, with the Louisiana Economic Development agency estimating that the average wage for workers at the site will be 192% higher than the region's current average salary. Additionally, the facility is projected to generate more than 8,100 indirect jobs. The agency stated that this project will position Louisiana as a global hub for next-generation aerospace, enhancing launch frequency and access to space. The new facility will share its name with an existing SpaceX site in Texas, where residents approved the incorporation of a patch of land as a city called Starbase in 2025. Musk has outlined ambitious goals for SpaceX, including plans for Mars exploration, AI development, and launching data centers into space. In August, SpaceX and Tesla announced plans for a $16.8 billion AI chip manufacturing facility in Texas to meet the increasing demand for computing power for their projects. Despite the ambitious expansion plans, SpaceX's shares have fallen over 30% from their peak since the IPO, although they remain above the initial offer price of $135.
