Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi visited Tehran on August 25, 2026, to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The two diplomats discussed a proposed framework for a temporary transit corridor through the Strait of Hormuz and a mine-clearing project in the waterway. According to a joint statement from Oman, they explored a phased framework that could serve as a practical basis for future plans in the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz has been a focal point of tensions in the Middle East, and both countries are working on a plan to regulate transit through it, following a June memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict.
The proposed framework includes establishing a temporary joint navigation corridor and a project to clear mines from the strait. Technical negotiations will continue to reach an agreement on a permanent navigation corridor and future management arrangements for the strait, including information exchange, navigation traffic management, and related security services.
Albusaidi expressed hope that the two countries would soon announce the temporary corridor. He noted that future management of the strait and a permanent solution would follow. The ministers emphasized the importance of arrangements that respect the sovereignty of both nations and highlighted the need for joint discussions with Gulf coastal states to ensure compliance with international law.
The discussions occurred after US President Donald Trump claimed that all mines had been removed from the International Waters of the Strait of Hormuz, citing the US Navy. He warned that any new mines placed in the strait would be destroyed.
The region has faced increased tensions since the outbreak of war following US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, which led to blockades affecting navigation through the strait, a crucial route for global oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Iran has stated that the strait will not fully reopen until the US meets its demands, including lifting the naval blockade and sanctions.
