In an interview with MS Now, Cruz questioned the assumption that Vice President JD Vance would be Trump's successor, stating that the party must engage in introspection to determine its future direction. He also mentioned the possibility of running for president in 2028, saying, “There’ll be time to figure that out.”
Cruz emphasized the ongoing debate within the party regarding its identity, asking whether it should remain a small-government, free-market conservative party or shift towards a larger government approach. He acknowledged Trump's courage in Washington, describing him as a “fearless” leader, while also expressing a desire for Trump to exhibit more “message discipline and focus.” Cruz noted that he communicates with Trump frequently, stating, “He doesn’t always listen to me, but he frequently listens to me.”
Cruz warned that Trump's exit from the White House in January 2029 would create a leadership vacuum in the Republican Party. He highlighted the need for discussions about potential successors and the ideological direction of the party amid speculation about candidates like Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the 2028 presidential nomination. Cruz remarked, “[Trump] is a unique historical figure. There’s never been anyone like him; I don’t think there will be anyone like him going forward.” He indicated that Republicans will need to engage in conversations about the party's future in the coming years.
