Suspect in Tucson Police Cadet Killing Arrested After Five-Day Manhunt

<p>Alex James Barnett, 33, has been arrested after authorities located him in an apartment complex following a five-day manhunt. He is suspected in the home invasion shooting of Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez, 23.</p><p>Ramirez's fiancée, a Pima County corrections officer, is hospitalized in stable condition after the incident.</p><p>Authorities received a tip about Barnett's location near East Broadway Boulevard and South Camino Seco around 6 p.m. on Monday, according to a statement from the Pima County Sheriff's Department. County SWAT officers apprehended him after a three-hour standoff, with no additional injuries reported.</p><p>Another suspect, Santiago Jorge Rogers, 39, was arrested at a hotel near Tucson International Airport on Saturday morning.</p><p>Both suspects are currently being held without bail at the Pima County jail.</p><p>Barnett has a criminal record that includes prior burglary and weapons convictions, and he is also known as Alex Wilson, according to court records. He pleaded guilty to an unlawful imprisonment charge in December 2024.</p><p>A search of Pima County courts for prior cases returned no results for Rogers. However, a person with the same name and age has drug and shoplifting convictions in Yavapai County, as well as possession of contraband behind bars in Navajo and Graham Counties, along with various lesser charges in Prescott.</p><p>Surveillance video shows men identified as Rogers and Barnett wearing black clothing and purchasing items at a gas station convenience store approximately 20 minutes before the shooting.</p><p>Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos previously stated that the suspects were dressed in all black clothing and ski masks during the attack.</p><p>A third individual connected to the suspect vehicle has been contacted by authorities regarding the case but has not been charged at this time. The department noted, "No arrest has been made as investigators work to determine his involvement."</p><p>Ramirez was shot dead at his home in southwestern Tucson early Wednesday morning, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department. He was scheduled to graduate from the police academy on August 27 and had previously worked for the Pima County Sheriff's Department as a corrections officer.</p><p>His 23-year-old fiancée, whose name has not been disclosed, also serves as a corrections officer in the department.</p>
