New York City Mayor Mamdani Opposes Changes to Brooklyn Democratic Party Rules

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has expressed opposition to proposed changes to the Brooklyn Democratic Party rules, arguing that they would undermine the will of voters following recent reform gains in the June primary. Mamdani stated, "I very much oppose these proposed changes, by the current Brooklyn Democratic Party chair. I oppose them because they are an attempt to circumnavigate the will of voters." The proposals, put forth by Brooklyn Democratic Party chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, would add over two dozen voting members to the party’s executive committee, which will select the party chair this fall. This follows a primary in which reformers won 22 district leader seats. The newly elected district leaders will not assume their positions until the fall, while Bichotte Hermelyn and her supporters currently hold a majority. Bichotte Hermelyn has characterized the changes as efforts to broaden participation within the party, stating, "We want to create a perception of inclusiveness." The reformers have endorsed Julio Peña for the next party chair. New York Attorney General Letitia James and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams have also opposed the proposed changes, stating that they go against Democratic principles. Another proposal would allow former party chairs to vote in future leadership elections, raising concerns about the influence of past leaders, including Clarence Norman, who resigned in 2005 after corruption convictions.
