Iranian Cyberattacks Target US and UK Critical Infrastructure

Iranian-linked hackers have targeted water and power facilities in the United States and the United Kingdom, revealing vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure defenses, according to cybersecurity expert Annie Fixler from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. Last month, attacks on water facilities in 12 US states coincided with a four-day shutdown of a power plant in the UK, as confirmed by UK officials. Fixler noted that these attacks indicate Iran's increasing success in exploiting weaknesses in cybersecurity. The US Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency had previously warned of attempts by Iranian hackers to disrupt American water systems. The attacks have resulted in brief shutdowns and boil-water notices in some areas. Fixler emphasized that the ease of access to critical infrastructure has made it easier for hackers to exploit vulnerabilities.
