Northern Virginia Democrats are facing scrutiny regarding the case of Abdulloi Doniyor Toshpulodzoda, a Tajik national who escaped to Tajikistan after being held at a mental health facility following a not guilty verdict by reason of insanity for killing his landlord. Toshpulodzoda was permitted escorted visits, including trips to the Tajik embassy in Washington, D.C., and an Alexandria apartment, where he obtained an airline ticket to Dushanbe.
Representative Donald Beyer, D-Va., commented on the situation, stating, "There's a failure in the system somewhere along the way," and emphasized the need for accountability. Beyer also defended local leaders against claims that Fairfax County is a 'sanctuary' jurisdiction for illegal immigrants, asserting that serious crimes should be addressed in the U.S. before considering deportation.
Representative Suhas Subramanyam, who represents neighboring counties, echoed the sentiment that undocumented individuals who commit crimes should be held accountable. He noted that while serious offenses warrant consideration for deportation, minor offenses should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Laura Birnbaum, a spokesperson for Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano, stated that the office did not oppose Toshpulodzoda's escorted visit to the embassy in 2024 but had successfully argued against his outright release in court multiple times.
