Allies of Republican Michigan Senate nominee Mike Rogers are advising AIPAC not to initiate an advertising campaign on his behalf, citing concerns that the group's involvement could negatively impact his campaign in November. Rogers met with AIPAC chairman Michael Tuchin in Los Angeles last week, after which the organization decided to pause a completed advertisement that targeted Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, according to Axios.
The disagreement reportedly revolves around the visibility of AIPAC's support for Rogers, who is known for his strong backing of Israel. Rogers' allies have suggested that AIPAC donors contribute to a pro-Rogers super PAC or a joint fundraising effort with the campaign and national Republicans, and have proposed involving AIPAC political strategists in these efforts.
AIPAC officials, however, have expressed a desire to take a public stance against El-Sayed, arguing that he would associate Rogers with the organization regardless of their actions. Discussions between the two sides have stalled, leading Republican donors with connections to both parties to seek to improve relations.
AIPAC and its affiliates previously spent over $30 million during Michigan's Democratic primary in an unsuccessful attempt to defeat El-Sayed, who has been critical of Israel. El-Sayed has highlighted AIPAC's financial influence in his campaign, framing it as an example of wealthy interests attempting to sway the nomination process.
Following his primary victory, AIPAC reaffirmed its commitment to opposing El-Sayed, whom it describes as having a "radical anti-Israel agenda." The political landscape in Michigan is complex, as the state has a significant Arab-American population, and a recent Fox News poll indicated that 55% of Michigan voters oppose increased U.S. aid to Israel.
The upcoming Senate race is anticipated to be highly significant, with Rogers aiming to secure the seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters. Despite the reported tensions, Rogers has publicly expressed openness to support from the pro-Israel community, stating, "I welcome any and all support from the pro-Israel community," and expressed pride in their involvement.
