Children's YouTuber Ms. Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Accurso, stated on social media that Black individuals do not hang themselves from trees, following the conclusion by Raleigh police that a 32-year-old Black man found hanging from a tree in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, died by suicide. In a video posted on Tuesday, she urged her followers to listen to the Black community and referenced multiple similar cases.
Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce reported that the deceased had a history of mental health issues and was seen on video approaching a tree with an electrical cord, with no other individuals present. Boyce confirmed that the investigation found no evidence of foul play. The man's mother also indicated that he had struggled with mental health challenges.
While the U.S. has a history of lynching Black individuals, Boyce emphasized that there was no indication of criminal activity in this case. Ms. Rachel's video was released shortly after the incident, and she did not specify any particular case. She has been known for her advocacy on various social issues through her platform.
