Jessica Bowie, a woman from Albany, New York, has been charged with plotting to detonate an explosive device at the New York State Capitol in support of the Islamic State group. According to court records, Bowie was arrested on Wednesday while attempting to acquire what she believed to be an explosive device. The Justice Department reported that Bowie had multiple interactions with three undercover FBI operatives who provided her with guidance on weaponry and explosives.
Bowie's defense attorney has not commented on the case. She appeared in court on Thursday and is being held without bail, facing charges that could result in a maximum of 20 years in prison for attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
The FBI's complaint details Bowie's online statements expressing support for violent acts against perceived enemies of Islam, including comments made prior to her interactions with the undercover agents. The complaint also indicates that Bowie was observed surveilling the state capitol and purchasing materials for bomb-making after receiving funds from an undercover operative.
Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that this case exemplifies federal law enforcement's efforts to prevent potential terrorist attacks.
