Texas Appeals Court Reduces Judgment Against Alex Jones in Sandy Hook Case

A Texas appeals court has reduced a $50 million judgment against Alex Jones for falsely claiming that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was staged, lowering it to $1.5 million. This ruling follows a 2022 trial where Jones was found liable for defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress after making repeated claims that the shooting was fabricated. The court determined that the parents of Jesse Lewis, a victim of the shooting, did not provide sufficient evidence to justify damages exceeding Texas's $750,000 statutory cap. The court stated that the trial court had 'abused its discretion' in allowing the higher judgment. Jones's attorney indicated that they would appeal the damages award, which was anticipated to be reduced to approximately $1.5 million. Jones has argued that the lawsuit infringes on his First Amendment rights, although he admitted during the trial that the shooting was real and that he had lied about it. The ruling is seen as a victory for Jones and his media company, Free Speech Systems, which operates the now-inactive Infowars. However, it does not impact a separate $1.4 billion judgment against Jones in Connecticut related to the Sandy Hook claims. Jones and Free Speech Systems are currently undergoing bankruptcy proceedings.
