The Trump administration has announced a new space policy aimed at increasing U.S. space traffic to nearly three launches or reentries per day by 2030. This initiative is intended to accelerate the deployment of satellites that support GPS, weather forecasts, internet access, and military communications, as the U.S. seeks to maintain its competitive edge over China in space activities.
A policy directive released by the White House instructs federal agencies to enhance U.S. launch and reentry infrastructure to accommodate over 1,000 rocket launches and spacecraft returns annually by 2030. The plan includes expanding launchpads, military ranges, airspace corridors, and regulatory systems, with an emphasis on collaboration with commercial companies.
In fiscal year 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) licensed a record 148 commercial launches and reentries. The new policy reflects the growing importance of space as a component of the U.S. economic infrastructure, as reliance on satellite services increases among businesses, households, and government agencies.
The policy is introduced amid China's rapid expansion in space capabilities, including the development of launch sites and satellite constellations for various applications. The Pentagon has raised concerns about China's advancements in missile technology and other tools that could disrupt U.S. satellite operations during a conflict.
In 2024, China launched 67 satellites capable of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, bringing its total to over 500, according to Pentagon reports. Analysts have warned that in a potential conflict, initial attacks could target satellites, and the ability to quickly launch replacement satellites may be crucial for maintaining operational capabilities.
The policy also directs NASA and the Transportation Department to identify barriers to launching high-priority civilian or national-security payloads within 48 hours. This would enable rapid replacement of critical satellites if needed. Additionally, the plan acknowledges potential disruptions from increased launch activity and mandates the Transportation Department to develop a strategy for integrating launch and reentry management into air traffic control modernization within 180 days.
While the policy outlines a framework for achieving these goals, it does not allocate funding or guarantee that the 2030 targets will be met. It aims to address challenges such as limited launch ranges, crowded airspace, permitting delays, and infrastructure shortages that could hinder satellite deployment.
