A Chinese national residing in Massachusetts, Yupeng Sun, age 33, was arrested on August 20, 2026, after being charged with fraudulent voter registration and voting under another person's name in the 2024 presidential election. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts, Sun allegedly admitted to registering and voting using the identity of another Chinese national during an interview with federal investigators in July. The complaint states that Sun confirmed his actions when presented with the victim's voter registration information and a photograph of the ballot envelope submitted at Malden City Hall on October 31, 2024.
Sun had previously rented a room from the victim and his family. Investigators allege that he also impersonated the victim and his wife in immigration documents, which led to their legal permanent resident status being challenged. An immigration judge later restored their status in January 2026 after finding their testimony credible.
Additionally, Sun reportedly submitted anonymous tips to immigration authorities accusing the victim of illegally voting. Sun entered the U.S. in September 2020 on a B-2 tourist visa, which expired in March 2021, and he currently has deferred action status based on a U-Visa application submitted in February 2022. Each charge of voter fraud carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, along with potential deportation after serving any sentence.
