A Chinese national residing in Massachusetts was arrested on charges of voter fraud related to the 2024 presidential election. Yupeng Sun, 33, from Andover, allegedly impersonated another individual to register and vote, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts. The criminal complaint states that Sun admitted to federal investigators that he registered the victim to vote and cast a ballot using the victim's identity.
During an interview in July, Sun reportedly acknowledged his actions when confronted with evidence of the victim's voter registration. The complaint indicates that a ballot submitted under the victim's name was accepted for the election. Sun had previously rented a room from the victim and his family and is accused of submitting immigration documents impersonating them.
Following an international trip, the victim and his spouse had their green cards confiscated and faced removal proceedings, although their status was restored by an immigration judge in January 2026. Sun is also alleged to have reported the victim to immigration authorities for voting illegally. He entered the U.S. in September 2020 on a tourist visa that expired in March 2021 and currently has deferred action status based on a U-Visa application. Each charge of voter fraud carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, along with potential deportation after serving any sentence. The investigation involved the U.S. Attorney's Office and local police departments.
