This initiative raises questions about the feasibility of floating nuclear power plants, particularly along the East and West Coasts of the U.S. James Walker, CEO of NANO Nuclear Energy, expressed skepticism regarding the viability of offshore nuclear plants, citing the higher costs associated with offshore construction compared to onshore facilities. He noted that building on land is more financially feasible as it avoids the logistical challenges of transporting materials and personnel by sea.
Walker mentioned that while deploying nuclear energy technology is not inherently difficult, projects may face delays due to regulatory requirements. Developers must demonstrate thorough safety evaluations to licensing agencies, addressing potential risks such as maritime accidents.
NANO Nuclear is currently working on portable and stationary micro modular reactors, which could be utilized by the oil and gas industry. There is interest from several companies in these reactors, although no small modular reactors are currently operational in the U.S. A recent cooperation agreement was signed between the Port of Long Beach and the federal Maritime Administration to establish safety standards for using small modular reactors.
